HALLWAY

This story is prompted by Sue Vincent’s Daily Echo Thursday photo prompt:  #writephoto.

“Dona mihi transitum scholae.” The nausea, the spinning, the stomachache. Emme landed with a thud and fell hard. She worked to calm her stomach and the nausea and took deep breaths. It took a few seconds, but she managed it.

When she opened her eyes, he stood there before her. Where the hell was she? Definitely not the school. At least not part of the school that she recognized. Some old hall. Emme Jumped back. A knight covered in cobwebs, blocked her escape. This couldn’t be good.

Think, Emme, think. Before she made her move, he reached out and grabbed her wrist. Emme struggled but couldn’t move. His grip, unbreakable. She screamed.

His voice cracked, barely above a whisper. “Do not fear, child.”

He barely got out the words. And they were not at all comforting. They echoed in his armor. In a strange place, no one around but this creepy old knight. Ora dead. Nothing was going right.

Whoever wanted her dead would surely succeed. No one could protect her. The man was everywhere. How could she possible survive? She needed to escape. The kitchen. She had to try. Dona mihi transium culina scrinium. Nothing happened. Did she need to say the incantation aloud? “ Dona mihi transium culina scrinum.” Still nothing.

Why her? What made her the chosen one? Destiny would get her killed, just like it got Ora killed. She jerked her hand again. His grip was too tight, and she could hear footsteps coming down the hallway.
