THE PORTAL

Alfie couldn’t believe they made the portal into their world so easy to spot. He’d worked his entire life to hide their existence and now this? He shook his head. This needed to be changed and changed immediately.

The Elder Council mustn’t know about this. That was about to change. He would go before them and make them aware. Alfie penned his request to be heard at the next meeting and received word that his request had been granted. Now he had to wait the two weeks before they met.

Each day, Alfie surfaced to protect the portal. Could one elfin protect everyone? Another day passed without out incident, but the humans passed by several times per day. His magic kept him hidden from their sight. But for how long? It was only a matter of time.

Today, the day of the meeting, a tiny human approached the tree. She was smiling, giggling, as she entered the hollow. Behind her, a tall human. This was bad. Very bad. Alfie cast a spell to keep the portal from opening. He got lucky. The tall human picked up the tiny one and pulled her away, yelling the entire time.

His self-imposed watch ended as night fell. Tonight, he would present to the Elder Council. His turn came and he stepped forward. Alfie detailed what had been happening since his discovery of the open portal to their world. Council voted to move the portal to a less conspicuous place, putting Alfie in charge.

Before the meeting ended, a strange noise echoed throughout the chamber. Everyone spoke at once. The room shook. The noise got louder. Pictures fell. The floor cracked. Alfie looked to the sound of the noise. As he feared, the tall human from earlier had found his way inside and was destroying their world.
