The Mountain
Mia watched another couple climb the mountain and join hands. Once joined, the sunset broke over the mountain and the sky turned a beautiful color. Their union was blessed, and they would live a long, happy, prosperous life. She longed for the day that she and Tom would be able to do the same.
Day after day, couples climbed the mountain to learn their fate. Each day, the unions were blessed and the couples permitted to marry.
After months of watching, it became Mia and Tom’s turn.
“Are you ready,” Tom asked?
“I’ve loved you, forever. Let’s do this,” Mia said.
As the others had done, they climbed the mountain and joined hands. Clouds formed, and rain poured down.
“Why us? It’s not fair,” Mia screamed and slumped to the ground.
“Run,” Tom yelled as he yanked her up.
They made it to the middle of the mountain before they met their fate.
This story is prompted by Sue Vincent’s Daily Echo Thursday photo prompt: #writephoto.
Stop over and give it a try.
Reminds me of something Shirley Jackson would have written if she dabbled in flash fiction.
Thanks, Staci. I could see this a much longer story. Maybe novella length.
Nice! and I agree, you could make this into a much longer tale…
Thanks, Sue. I try to keep them short as there are so many others that post wonderful stories for your prompts.
Very cool, Michele.I liked the contrast between the mood of the photo and your story.
Thanks,Mae. I like finding a different take on the photos.
