VOYAGE OF THE LANTERNFISH BOOK REVIEW
I love a good pirate book—who doesn’t? So when Mr. Boyack, one of my go to authors, wrote one, I knew I had to read it. Boyack didn’t disappoint. Voyage of the Lanternfish had it all, and more. His characters were well-written and charismatic, and his plot was well developed. He has a way of creating unusual characters and giving them personality.
Even Boyack’s supporting characters are compelling. My personal favorite were the root monsters. Watching them evolve and listening to them tell and retell stories of the high-seas made me laugh, especially since they have an interesting take on the English language and often created their own words. And who knew that getting a name would be a badge of honor?
Boyack had me turning the pages as fast as I could to see where the Lanternfish would take me next. A must read for anyone that likes magic, pirates, mystery, and a good fight. Grab a tankard and have a seat. You’re in for one fantastic voyage.
Blurb:
An honorable man is mistaken for his disreputable father. Now he’s pushed into a political scheme to start a war that will spread across multiple kingdoms. James Cuttler’s fiancé is being held captive to ensure he goes through with the plan.
He soon decides his skills are at sea and procures a ship to wage war upon those who disrupted his simple life. He can’t do it alone, so he recruits a band of cutthroats to help him. But first, they need guns and munitions to outfit the ship properly. Deception and trickery will only get them so far. Eventually, they’re going to have to engage the enemy.
James’ goals aren’t necessarily the same as his crew. It’s a delicate balancing act to collect enough loot to keep his crew happy, while guiding them back to rescue the girl.
Voyage of the Lanternfish is filled with adventure, magic, and monsters. Lots of monsters. Hoist the colors and come along for the ride.

Love this review, Michele. He’s one of my go-to authors, too, and Voyage of the Lanternfish was epic. The root monsters captured my heart, and I’m SO looking forward to more of them.
Me too. I think they should be available for purchase. I would have a collection.
What a lovely surprise this morning. Glad you enjoyed the story.
Thanks, Craig. I cannot wait until you release the prequel. And of course, we all want another story featuring the root monsters.
Great review, Michele. I adored Voyage of the Lanterfish, and most especially the root monsters! Reblogged this on https://harmonykent.co.uk/voyage-of-the-lanternfish-book-review/
Thanks, Harmony.
Me too. I see the root monster were a hit with everyone who read Lanternfish. Thanks for stopping by.
I think Craig could market the root monsters, LOL.
Great review, Michele. Voyage of the Lanternfish was a highly entertaining read. Nice to see it getting more exposure. I’m hoping Craig takes his readers on another voyage!
If I had paper books and did live conventions, I could offer packets of seeds with their faces on them.
You have a marketing gold mind with these guys!
BTW, have you thought about having Lisa interview them for LBR? There’s been a lot of buzz about root monsters on various blogs. An interview with them could be a draw for readers who haven’t bought the book yet.
Great idea, Mae. I would collect the little guys. Especially if they talked. That would be awesome.
Root Monster Mania 😀
I’m a little nervous about that. There is a certain amount of reader training that went into understanding them. A word here, a new one there. Don’t know how it might come across on Lisa’s show.
I think you could pull it off. And, you could always use Lisa as a translator.
Keep it in the back of your mind for down the road. I have no doubt you could pull it off.
Craig, you can always get this book into print format. And that would be a great giveaway.
Grow your own root monster. I can see it now.
thanks, Mae. I enjoyed his book immensely. I’m glad he is working on another book that will include the little guys. They stole the show.
I haven’t finished the book yet, but count me in as a fan of the root monsters also, Michele!
Teri, glad you are a root monster fan. They really add to the story.
Great review and the root monsters were my favorite as well!
Thanks for stopping by. Looking at the posts, the root monsters have a huge fan club.
Great review! I have this on my TBR pile, but think I have to bump it up the list 🙂
Thanks, Jacquie. Definitely bump it up. You will be happy that you did. Craig did a great job.
